Hour of Code

The 2015 Hour of Code was a great success!! Over 50 students attended the after school event to practice their computer coding skills.  From beginner to advanced, all the students intensely worked on coding activities, many not wanting to leave at the end of the hour!  A few of this year's most popular activities included Minecraft, Star Wars and Frozen. Students can continue the coding activities at home using the following website: https://code.org/learn

6th grade Book Club

The 6th grade book club just finished reading Shadow on the Mountain by Margi Preus.  For the past three months, the group of about 25 students met in the book club room instead of going to the cafeteria.  Ms. Perrin read the book aloud while the participants ate their lunches.  We learned a lot about what it was like in Norway during World War II and what it was like to be a member of the Norwegian Resistance Movement.  On the last day of our club, we wrote a letter to the author and are hopeful of getting a response.  If you are interested in learning about all the books by this author click here.

Sally Walker Visits Woodland

Award winning non-fiction author, Sally Walker, visited with all 6th grade students during their language arts classes on December 4th.  Ms. Walker talked to the students about how she became a writer, where she gets her ideas, the research process and how a book is published. A small group of students were able participate in a lunchtime event, Sandwiches with Sally, at which they were able to interact personally with Ms. Walker.  All of her books are available for check out in the LRC.
