Battle of the Books
It is time, once again, to begin preparing for the 4th annual Lake County Battle of the Books competition. All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to participate. All questions will be based on the 2013 Rebecca Caudill nominees. Any interested students should see Ms. Perrin in the LRC before Thursday, March 7th.

Read to Succeed - Chicago Wolves
If you have been participating in the Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed program, your reading minutes log is due back on Wednesday, December 19th. Please bring your completed form to the LRC on or before the 19th to receive a certificate for your free ticket to a Chicago Wolves hockey game. If you have any questions, see Mrs. Perrin in the LRC. Award Winning Author - James Deem
So sorry to have been away from the blog for so long!! We have had some "technical difficulties" and I have been unable to post. But now that we are back up and running, the first thing I am going to talk about is our upcoming author visit.
On Monday and Tuesday (December 3 and 4), award winning author James Deem will be returning to the Woodland Middle School LRC. Mr. Deem will be meeting with all 6th graders to discuss his research and writing of books about ancient civilizations. He will also meet with a select small group of 6th graders during lunch on Monday to answer questions and autograph books.
On Tuesday, after finishing with the 6th graders, Mr. Deem will meet with interested 8th graders during their lunch time to discuss his two Holocaust books.
We are very excited to have him return to our school to share his writing experiences with our students!!

6th Grade Book Club Begins!!
It is time, once again, to begin one of my favorites parts of this job...the 6th Grade Lunch Time Book Club! All 6th graders from the Lynx 1, Puma 1 and Puma 2 teams had a special visit from me and were invited to join this very fun group. Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 4th during 6th grade lunch time in room C130. Starting next week, and continuing until we finish the book, we will meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
I am so excited to announce that we will be reading The Year Money Grew on Trees, by Aaron Hawkins. This book is a nominee for this year's Rebecca Caudill Award and should prove to be an excellent story for all of us to enjoy!

The One and Only Ivan
I read a couple of books this summer that really touched me. They made me really think about the world and the way we treat all living things. Since I still think about the books and the message they give to readers, they must have really meant something to me.
The first book I will discuss is The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Last spring, I went to a conference and listened to Mrs. Applegate talk about how and why she wrote this book. I was very curious, so I put it on my summer reading list. It was well worth it!!!
Although Ivan is a real gorilla and the basics of the story are based on Ivan's life, she did add elements to the story that are not true. That makes this book a work of fiction.
The real Ivan passed away the week school started and I was so glad I had read the book before he passed. If you would like to learn more about Ivan's life, you can click here.
Just to show you how much this book changed the way I think about caging wild animals for our amusement, a couple of weeks ago I did something very out of character for me. There was a circus in the shopping center mall and as I drove down the street I yelled out my window "FREE THE ELEPHANTS...FREE THE GORILLAS!!" Needless to say, my son was very embarrassed to be in the car with me.
Just read the book and you will understand!
